One of my son's most cherished outings when he was little was our trip to Lil 500, a go-kart track in the Orlando area. A beloved local institution for over 50 years, Lil 500 boasted three tracks: a beginner, an intermediate, and an advanced course that required drivers to be at least 10 years old.
My son practically grew up at Lil 500, starting on the beginner track when he was just old enough to steer. The beginner karts were two-seaters, so I took charge of the gas and brakes while he guided our kart. As he grew, he graduated to the intermediate track, which featured faster single-seater karts. Yet, he often cast eager glances at the advanced or "fast" track, where karts zoomed through the course at exhilarating speeds, driven by older kids and adults. The excitement was amplified by the track's tight oval design and polished concrete turns, making steering a challenge, with spin-outs happening regularly. It was pure joy!
